The best thing to do in Venice is just to wander and get lost if you can. Going a little out of the way of the crowds is very rewarding.
At the train station, you can buy a 72 hour pass on the Vaporetto, or water bus. They also have tickets with vaporetto and museum passes together. They were sold out for us, but I imagine it is a good idea. The water busses can take you anywhere you want to go as long as you can figure out the time schedule posted at the “bus stop”.
We stayed at the Hotel Ai Do Mori. Space in Venice is at a premium. All hotels are cramped and impossibly tiny, but clean.
Things to do in Venice:

St. Mark’s (pictured)- Getting in is free, but pay a bit extra to see the Byzantine horse museum. The bell tower has an elevator so it is a fun ride up to the top to see the view of Venice.
St. Mark’s square- at night, it is a great place to sit and relax
Rialto Bridge
Dorsoduro province- Zattere street is where all the real Venetians hang out. There are some wonderful restaurants there as well. It is a great place to feel not so touristy.
Accademia- Pay to get in and then pay a little extra to get a headset to hear someone tell you about all the works of art. Without it, again, it is
easy to get a little overwhelmed.
La Salute church
Friari church- strange and beautiful church with some important works of art
Murano- a outlying island with glass-blowing shops. You can take a vaporetto over, though many people will ask if you want them to take you over in their own boats. They will take you to their glass shops and they make it hard for you to leave.
Doge’s palace- This is another good place to get a headset to learn about the palace. Without a headset it looks like a bunch of empty rooms.
